20 awesome things to do with kids in London: January 2024

  1.  Big Penny Social’s popular House of Bounce event is back from 2nd-5th. The whole of the venue’s event space will be taken over by massive inflatables, including a huge inflatable assault course, and there will be dedicated relaxed and 0-3s sessions. Paid.
  2. Wolf Witch Giant Fairy is at the Royal Opera House from 2nd-6th. Red Riding Hood is tasked with delivering bread to her Grandmother, deep in the heart of the fairy-tale forest. But en route, Red meets a cunning Wolf who tricks her into taking a different path. Paid.
  3. There’s lots going on at Young V&A this month, including Make-Lab Workshop: Sound Design with School of Noise for 7-14s on the 6th, Mini Play and Sound Explorers for 0-2s on Fridays from the 12th, and Create! Studio for all ages on Sundays from the 14th. Free/paid.
  4. Story Space Read Aloud: Jamel Carly Campbell will be at Tate Britain on the 6th. Listen to the early years educator, author and storyteller read from his favourite children’s books, and have fun dressing up, moving and singing along to some favourite nursery rhymes. Free.
  5. RIBA Baby: Bricks and Bubbles is back at the Royal Institute of British Architects on the 9th. Devised for ages 0-3 and their adults, this regular session aims to embolden babies through play and exploration, with plenty of bricks and bubbles. Free.
  6. British Library is running two family events this month: join artist and illustrator Dapo Adeola for a monster-filled storytime with your under-5s on the 12th, or delight ages 5+ with Family Storytelling: Adventures of Shakespeare’s First Folio on the 20th. Free.
  7. Big Penny Social will host Track Play on the 12th. Suitable for ages 18 months and up, the event invites kids to play on giant train tracks, all laid out ready to start playing with, with tunnels, stations, garages and bridges, plus all your kids’ favourite characters. Paid.
  8. Head to Camden Arts Centre on Saturdays from the 13th and join artist Emma Sheehy for Family Takeover: Making with Myths. Explore a range of processes and materials to create your own hybrid beings, abstracted animals and ceramic creatures. Free.
  9. The Together Space’s January event will be held at Big Penny Social on the 14th. Families with disabled and non-disabled children can make Sensory Sand Gardens with Art Forest School, cook with Kids Kitchen and meet the brilliant Mrs H and the Sing-Along Band. Paid.
  10. OAE Tots is at the Southbank Centre on the 14th. This upbeat concert will give families the chance to share the stage with a cast of weird and wonderful instruments, with spirited music, clapping hands, stamping feet and plenty of singing. Paid.
  11. Creative soft robotics studio Air Giants will host The Glowbot Garden on the Strand from 17th-20th. Approach, touch and interact with giant soft robots – many of which are taller than double-decker buses – in an outdoor experience like no other. Free.
  12. Winter Lights is back in Canary Wharf from 17th-27th. The eighth edition of the trail will take visitors on a journey through 12 spectacular temporary installations, including a meditative marble run, geometric monoliths and immersive laser projections. Free.
  13. The RA is running two family workshops this month. On the 17th, Early Years Studio: Texture will invite 0-5s to explore the way different materials feel, while on the 28th Family Studio: Drawing from Life asks kids of all ages to explore the world of life drawing. Free.
  14. Head to William Morris Gallery on the 18th for Creative Kids: How Does your Garden Grow?, a creative session for 2-5s inspired by Derek Jarman’s garden. Or pop in on the 27th for Family Day: Wild Wired! and create a collaged creature magnet from natural materials. Free.
  15. Little Feet: The Wonder of Winter is at British Museum on the 18th. Part of the museum’s under-5s series, this drop-in workshop will give little ones the chance to dwell in the dark den, create a snowflake mobile and wander the wintery path. Free.
  16. Alice Irwin’s Chinwag opens at Pitzhanger Manor from the 24th. The exhibition presents an array of Irwin’s new works, including colourful, multi-layered screenprints and two newly commissioned Peeps – Irwin’s human-like 3D figures – in brushed metal. Paid.
  17. Cute opens at Somerset House from the 25th. The exhibition will feature a games arcade for all ages and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hello Kitty, as well as featuring contemporary artworks and cultural phenomena including music, fashion and toys. Paid.
  18. Culturetree founder Gbemisola Isimi will host Family Space: Culturetree at South London Gallery on the 27th. Aimed at 5-12s and their families, this drop-in creative workshop will be self-directed and supported by the SLG’s Art and Play team. Free.
  19. Barefoot Yoga is hosting Kids’ Special Puppy Cuddles, Yoga and Playtime sessions on the 27th and 28th. The puppies, who will be aged 8-14 weeks old, will roam from one mat to the next, leaping on participants, and tussling with other puppies as you try out different poses. Paid.
  20. Head to St Martin in the Fields from the 30th and immerse yourself in Life, a spectacular sound and light show that will be projected onto the site’s exterior, underground crypt and church, taking visitors of all ages on a dazzling journey through earth, sea and sky. Paid.
