- ZSL London Zoo’s Animal Adventure children’s area is now open. Specially designed low barriers mean younger visitors can come face to face with animals including meerkats, and there’s also a new play area featuring a water splash zone.
- Head to Westfield London until the 4th to try out The Jungle Adventure. Children aged 3+ are invited to take part in a variety of free activities, including taking on the climbing wall, toy-animal riding, face painting, puzzles and competitions.
- Whippersnappers Fairyland will be popping up in Dulwich Park on the 1st, 3rd, 8th and 10th. During this immersive theatrical adventure, 3-7s are invited to explore, meet magical characters and even go home with their own fairy or dragon wings.
- OKIDO’s Art and Science Summer Club for 3-7s will be popping up at Herne Hill’s Copper Beech Cafe on Fridays throughout August. Each workshop will focus on a different topic and involve a fun science experiment or making activity.
- Dulwich Picture Gallery’s Family Festival: Colourfest will take place on the 4th. Suitable for all ages, this celebration of colour will include rainbow storytelling, printmaking, drawing, building and a new gallery family trail.
- Jewish Museum will host a Storytelling: Empathy Sundays – Homelessness event for ages 3-8 on the 4th. Participants will listen to stories before baking two loaves of challah bread – one to take away and one to be donated to a local homeless shelter.
- Tiny Space Explorers: A Sensory Experience is popping up at NHM from the 5th-9th. Taking place on an inflatable planetarium, this “cosmic vision-scape” for under-5s is designed to stimulate children’s senses and ignite their curiosity about outer space.
- British Museum is running two Little Feet under-5s sessions this month. On the 6th, Exhibition Explorer will offer little ones and their carers another chance to see Manga for free, while Get Splashy on the 16th will explore the world of water.
- Head to Hampstead’s Fenton House on Wednesdays throughout August to take part in Wild Wednesdays sessions for under-11s. Activities will include learning how Fenton’s bees work in the garden, as well as crafts and bug hotel making.
- Rave-Kidz is throwing a Boat Party at Tower Millennium Pier on the 7th. Suitable for all ages but aimed at those with over-4s, the party will feature uplifting dance music, games, soft play, face painting and a prize for the best-dressed raver.
- Whitechapel Gallery is hosting a Family Day themed around its current Michael Rakowitz exhibition on the 10th. Families with children of all ages are invited to get thinking about borders culture, identity and the significance of the everyday.
- Archway’s Hargrave Hall will be hosting a free immersive art project on the 12th. This messy activity for children aged 18 months to 4 will involve working with different materials to cover the hall’s floor and create a unique artwork.
- Catch a kid-friendly film in an awesome venue: Luna Cinema will be screening family favourites including Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Incredibles 2 and Moana when it pops up at at Hampton Court Palace from the 14th-18th.
- The Geffrye is running a variety of Acts of Kindess-themed Family Activities in its front gardens on Thursdays and Fridays from the 15th-30th. Expect interactive storytelling and craft sessions, as well as dressing up, trails and quizzes.
- Dread Falls Theatre’s The Lost Luggage Adventures is showing at The Cockpit on the 17th. Aimed at ages 3+, this original show combines magical puppetry and a unique pop-up set to tell stories contained within forgotten suitcases.
- Head to Japan House from the 22nd for Anno’s Journey, celebrating the work of Japanese children’s book illustrator Anno Mitsumasa. The exhibition, which will feature a reading library, is intended to introduce kids to the Japanese language.
- Half Moon will be hosting The Family Folk Show with Megson at the Crossrail Place Roof Garden on the 24th. Suitable for 3-8s, this interactive theatrical musical performance will comprise a blend of playful folk songs and clever storytelling.
- Smithfield Street Party: A Beastly Adventure will take place on the 25th, with activities including free-running, aerial performances, puppetry, face-painting, headdress making, den building on London’s biggest play street and lots more.
- RA is running a Family Studio: Face to Face workshop for children of all ages on the 25th. Inspired by Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck, the session invites children to explore self-portraiture, experimenting with painting styles and identities.
- Love Growing Organic is hosting a Full Fat Fun Fridays session at Kennington Park Centre on the 29th. Designed for all ages, it will include a sensory cave, animated aerobics, a drumming circle, story writing and outdoor play, plus loads more.
