SKATE at Somerset House with Fortnum & Mason

A is for ahhh: Somerset House calls it “London’s most beautiful ice rink” and I think they might be onto something. The picturesque Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court is fit as at the best of times but once the sizeable rink (complete with polar bear-populated mini rink for smaller skaters – though annoyingly this is basically sold out for the season) and 40ft Fortnum’s Christmas tree are installed come November, the Georgian quadrangle becomes positively magical, prompting a pretty much continuous chorus of “ooo”s and “ahh”s.

B is for Bailey’s Treat Bar: The purveyors of Christmas in a cup are back for another year rinkside, offering a menu dripping with deliciously sickly cocktails and festive drinks. Choose from Bailey’s hot chocolate, Bailey’s latte, Bailey’s flat white martini or just Bailey’s over ice, plus a huge array of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, and hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows for the kids.

C is for Christmas Arcade: Is it even Christmas if you haven’t browsed SH’s multi-room Fortnum & Mason pop-up, soaked up some festive vibes and concluded that there’s no fucking way you’re paying £20 for a packet of biscuits? Or maybe you do all your Christmas shopping in here. I don’t know, I don’t really know you. If I do know you though please can you buy me a pack of the £20 biscuits? The macadamia ones. Thanks.

Tickets: £8.50 for under-18s, £11-17 per adult depending on which day you go.

Verdict: Few things scream Christmas like iceskating under a giant pine tree followed by a mug of creamy Bailey’s hot chocolate and some yuletide gift shopping at Fortnum & Mason. 5/5

Babu and Bab Dad attempt to ice skate in an effort that tbf was a billion times better than last year (while I totally cop out… again) at SKATE, Somerset House.
